The Influence of Culture and Intercultural Contact on Neo-Racism and Ethnocentrism

Abstract Ethnicity-based discrimination remains a persistent concern across the globe. A recent yet disparate literature focused on role of cultural dimensions and intercultural contact in forming negative intergroup attitudes; however, these variables have to be included single study, so their unique effects cannot estimated. Furthermore, although it is well documented that may reduce out-group discrimination, its influence in-group favouritism relatively unexplored. The present study examines whether social dominance orientation (power distance), uncertainty avoidance, individualism/collectivism, can predict neo-racism ethnocentrism. Results from an online survey Slovenian sample ( N = 164) demonstrated was best predictor ethnocentrism, followed by contact. Findings indicate importance context shaping modifying attitudes increasing tolerance. implications for culturally-informed practices preventing/reducing are outlined.
